Caravan and motorcaravan insurance

Unlike cars, there is no legal requirement to insure your caravan against theft or damage but when you tow your caravan on public roads you must have thrid party caravan insurance. You'll usually find that your existing car policy covers you for this but check with your insurer first and make sure you have written confirmation of caravan insurance cover before you tow your caravn.

Unlike cars, the make and model of your caravan has little effect on the caravan insurance as long as it's built in the UK and is a single axle design. You may have more difficuly insuring a twin axle or German built caravan because these are more likely to be stolen. You can get insurance but the premiums are likely to be higher and you may find the insurer requires additional security measures.

Caravan insurance tips:

Make yourself a safer 'risk' for the insurance companies by fitting security equipement in particular a hitchlock and a wheelclamp. In addition to those an alarm or electronic tracking device will give you a better chance of a discount.

Owners who store their caravan at a high-security site will also receive the benefit of reduced caravan insurance premiums.
Anyone who increases their policy excess can reduce the cost of their caravan insurance premium.
